The V C Andrews Superfan Magazine

A few months back , head of the VC Andrews Superboard neisha Chetty decided to get together all the groups in the fandom and  create something truly special.

A magazine to showcase the fans and their love for the books VCA wrote.

It wasn’t an easy task by any means but with just one day past the deadline – a fantastic free new magazine has been put together.

This first issue I’m proud to say features my artwork as the cover and a lot of my attic Secrets pieces but also some wonderful reviews, fan fiction and an interview with the main man himself Andrew Neiderman! It showcases wonderful fans such as Jessica Zinder and collector Nehal Khan as well as a review by Ted Ryan.

It is literally filled to the brim.

Honouring the magazine with his endorsement too is Andrew Neiderman  himself “This is the most amazing things…

The Iconic V C Andrews Book Covers

Simple yet stunning ,  Flowers in the Attic  burst into the main stream with a cover idea that not only is iconic but revolutionised the entire paper back world in terms of design.

A stark image of a house with a hauntingly beautiful girl peeking out from an attic window ….on closer inspection if you lift the cover it reveals a disturbing yet intricately beautiful portrait of four vulnerable children, the girl included dressed in white with a malevolent force hovering behind them hands reaching out in a threatening manner.

These Stepbacks as they are referred to by fans are highly coveted,  adored and loved by the fandom who consider them to be ultimate book covers and collectors item.

From 1979 to 2007 this concept was used until it was thought they were too costly to keep recreating. This has saddened many fans and taken away something that was unique…

What Could Have Made Carrie lose Hope

Her weak and trembling voice faded away. Her eyes rolled heavenward and stayed open without blinking. Her lips stayed parted, as if she had something else to tell me. Dear God, she was dead!

Petals on the Wind

What was it that Carrie wanted to tell Cathy and never had the chance to ? Here’s one possible answer

I saw Momma coming out of the post office. There was my chance, my one and only chance to ask her… why. I had to know the truth. I calmly went up to her and tapped her shoulder…

“Momma, it’s me Carrie ”

She appeared shocked even stunned, like any minute would see her clumped up in heap unable to handle the situation.

“Momma ?” I reached out to touch her hand and know she was for real.

But she yanked her hand as if I was a leper. I was confused, frightened and hurt by her reaction.

“Get away from me, I don’t know you. I don’t have any children, you must be mistaking me with someone else. My name is Corrine Foxworth Winslow. I’ve never seen you in my life.” She said as if I were an annoyance.

Oh God, Momma, how can you be so heartless. Why would you deny me ? I thought bitterly. But I saw her eyes, her eyes betrayed her. She knew who I was … She knew !

She whirled around as if the very sight of me was offensive. I watched her walk away fast as if running , running far away from a past she wanted to deny she had ever lived.

She left me with tears in my eyes and pain in my heart then…

As I reached down into my purse to grab a tissue to wipe my eyes… I noticed something… Momma had dropped something, an envelope.

I saw the handwriting and I knew it was Daddy’s. Daddy who went to Heaven so long ago and then shortly took Cory there too. At times I couldn’t even remember what Daddy looked like until I saw Chris.

Dear Corrine

Oh my God, what was Daddy saying ? He and Momma were brother and sister… and all along he knew ? He knew ?!!! How could he have children when the whole world knew that was wrong ? What was I to do ? The grandmother was right. I should never been born. Oh Daddy how can you do this to us, and Momma too ? How could I marry Alex now, when I knew the truth ? How could I have his children ? I felt sick to the pit of my stomach. I can’t tell Cathy this, it will her hurt her. Chris will be back soon, I will show him this as soon as I can.

I knew now I couldn’t marry Alex, I couldn’t keep this from him. He’s going to become a minister. How could I shame him with this knowledge… My dad had done the same thing and deceived us all. I cried then an ocean of tears for the life I should have had …

Dollanganger excerpts pieces used to derive theory

Last week I started thinking about the grandmother and what she used to say to us all the time about being the Devil’s spawn. The more I thought about it, the more I knew she was right- we shouldn’t have been born! I am evil! When Cory died because of the arsenic on the sugared doughnuts the grandmother gave us, I should have died too! You didn’t think I knew, did you? You thought all the time I was sitting on the floor, in the corner, I
couldn’t hear and didn’t take notice, but I was seeing and hearing, but I
didn’t believe, back then. Now I believe.

What made her believe ???

“I called and asked to see her a week ago and her voice sounded strange, as if something terrible had happened and she couldn’t speak about it. I drove as fast as I could to be with her, but she wouldn’t let me in. Cathy, I love her!

What was so very, very terrible when she has known that Corrine denied them before ?

“I’ve got something secret to tell you. Her voice was so faint it seemed to come from over hundreds of soft, rounded, little hills far, far away. “I saw a lady on the street.” Her voice was so low I had to lean to hear. “She looked so much like Momma I had to run up. I caught hold of her hand. She snatched hers away and turned cold hard eyes on me. ‘I don’t know you’ she said. Cathy, that was our mother!
She looks like she used to almost, only a little older. She even had on the pearl necklace with the diamond butterfly clasp that I remember. And,
Cathy, when your own mother doesn’t want you-don’t that mean nobody can
want you? She looked at me and she knew who I was; I saw it in her eyes,
and still she didn’t want me because she knows I’m bad. That’s why she
said what she did-that she didn’t have any children. She doesn’t want you
or Chris either, Cathy, and all mothers love and want their children unless they’re evil, unholy children … like us.”

“Oh, Carrie! Don’t let her do this to you! It’s the love of money that
made her deny you … not that you are bad or wicked or unholy

And of course Chris Sr’s letter

Golden Raintree Question from Candace Marie Butler

“Reconstruction of hardback cover image from the 1948 edition, made by David Nale”
Raintree County Website

Candace Marie Butler asked on Whispered Dreams Theatre

“Since My Sweet Audrina and the Whitefern is coming out. Here is a picture of the Golden Raintree Audrinia was hurt underneath. Is this what you imagined? What are your thoughts on this? We would love to hear your thoughts on this. What impact did the Golden Raintree have on the Adare series? What do you think it signifies?”

It’s definitely an interesting set of questions, and it requires us to know a certain source. Like in the case of the Dollhouse or the Trains, this actually is a higher theory question. Little did Candace know I’ve been sourcing it for some time now.

Here’s what I’ve found so far …

“Trees symbolize some of our noblest thoughts, and, to many, the Golden Raintree symbolizes life, and the search we all execute – a search for knowledge and meaning in our own lives”

Audrina btw means “Noble Strength” and the tree is associated with noble thoughts.

But peer a little deeper into the Raintree mythos and you’ll find something pop up a heck of a lot … A novel called “Raintree County” written by Ross Lockridge Jr – a candidate for the ” Great American Novel”

MSA seems to draw on a lot of inspiration from Raintree County :-

1. Civil War : Raintree County covers the time before the civil war, during the civil war and after the civil war. Audrina has a lot of reference to the civil war and it’s symbolism.

2. It also has an association with Adam and Eve and the tree of Knowledge, and the Tree of Life, we saw something like this in Avatar as well…

“The county as the Garden of Eden, the raintree as the Tree of Knowledge dropping fertile spores on the land”

3. The meaning of NINE :

“The clock in the Court House Tower on page five of the Raintree County Atlas is always fixed at nine o’clock, and it is summer and the days are long.”—Ross Lockridge Jr.

Now, does that shed some light on the significance of Nine ? And what it means ?

4. “his novel deals in heroes, myths, religion, sex, falls and redemption, quests for renewal, and a protagonist who metaphorically returns from the dead”

Riddle of Raintree County

Well, well… Isn’t that what Audrina is about ?

5. The author Ross Lockridge Jr himself went through a state of deep depression and his treatment : Electroshock therapy, he was released later only to commit suicide at the age of 33. We know Audrina also underwent the electroshock therapy.

6. Just like Audrina. : “The book is often surreal, with dream sequences, flashbacks and departures from the linear narrative.”

Audrina isn’t a linear novel time wise, like the clocks, it sometimes runs backwards, forwards and somethings it just stops. Time like light is “refracted”.

7. The Prism effect : “Johnny Shawnessy tends to view the events of his life through the prism of one or more of these contexts, and to draw parallels to these legends, frequently with considerable justification.” Wiki

8. In the film adaptation starred Elizabeth Taylor, Billie was an Elizabeth Taylor look alike.

9. The human mind

Nat King Coles Song is the theme song to the movie. Written by WEBSTER, PAUL FRANCIS / GREEN, JOHN WALDO
“They say in Raintree County there’s a tree bright with blossoms of gold.
But you will find the Raintree’s a state of the mind, or a dream to enfold.”

Raintree County is a state of mind. It’s Audrina’s mind that actually created this illusion to protect her from a harsh reality.

“In Raintree long ago, for the brave who dare there’s a Raintree ev’rywhere. We who dreamed found it so, long ago. “

The brave who dare… A Dare to Dream…

Yeah, I made this into NINE POINTS.

Raintree County could be simply the key to understanding Audrina. I would go so far into stating that Virginia worked some of it’s concept into her own interpretation and came up with a masterpiece of her own.
